Substantial Equipment Donation from Spirent Communications Enhances the Scope of the CS Internet Teaching Laboratory
(Durham, N.H.) -- The Department of Computer Science recently received a substantial equipment donation from Spirent Communications, a communications technology company that delivers test equipment and services to customers worldwide. Spirent’s donation of the SmartBits 2000, an industry-standard network performance analysis system, will greatly enhance the spectrum of experiments which students can carry out in the CS Department's Internet Teaching Laboratory (ITL). With the donation, students will have greater exposure to tools widely used in the industry; and, in addition to being able to carry out more complex experiments, students will have improved control over their experiments, which will lead to a better result collection. The original list price of the equipment totals over $70,000.
The ITL, which is used for hands-on experiments, networking courses and student projects, was built in 2000 using an equipment grant from the Cooperative Association for Internet Data Analysis, an organization that provides tools and analyses promoting the engineering and maintenance of a robust, sociable global Internet Infrastructure.
