Durham, N.H. - David Dillon is the kind of guy that does his research. As a high school student, Dillon toured a combined 22 colleges and universities before deciding on the University of New Hampshire’s Computer Science Program.

“I didn’t consider UNH at first because it was right down the street,” admitted the Exeter, NH, native. “But once I started comparing schools UNH beat out every one.”

What made UNH come out on top?

For starters, Dillon says he loved, “the community-feel on campus.”

“It’s a big school but it feels small – it’s a friendly, beautiful campus,” he said.

Dillon, who just graduated in May, was also impressed with the faculty during his college search.

“During my tour here, I spoke with Brian Johnson (Undergraduate Coordinator of the Computer Science Department). He was so open, nice and willing to help,” said Dillon. “That was another attraction – knowing the faculty were like that at UNH.”

Another draw to UNH for Dillon: the diversity of programs they have to offer. In addition to being a Computer Science major, Dillon has chosen to minor in education.

“That was also important to me because I wouldn’t be able to get that (minor in education) at a technical school,” said Dillon.

But the biggest pull for Dillon was UNH’s InterOperability Laboratory, a world-class testing laboratory that works side by side with leading technology companies to improve their products before they get to market.

“It seemed like a good experience that was unique to UNH,” he said. Dillon interned at the IOL for over a year, gaining experience in Linux, basic data bases, and PHP.

During his senior year , Dillon interned at Docutron Systems in Portsmouth. There, he worked on document management software.“Instead of using filing cabinets, documents can be stored electronically – it’s a solution we sell to clients,” Dillon explained.

After working at Docutron for a year, Dillon had already received a job offer to work there after he graduates. His goal after graduation was to program for a living, then teach once he starts a family.
