There will be several short, unannounced quizzes. Quizzes will be given in class, beginning precisely at the scheduled start of class and closely timed. Quizzes may draw upon lecture material and/or the assigned readings.
   The quizzes are intended to encourage several types of behavior that will help you get through the course:

   Quizzes will be strictly timed so that we do not lose excessive amounts of lecture time. If you have a documented need for additional time on exams, be sure to see me during the first week of classes.
   Since makeups for quizzes will be allowed only with a doctor’s note or under other extreme circumstances, I will drop the lowest quiz score at the end of the semester. I would strongly recommend, however, that you not rely on this fact in a calculated way (“I can sleep in today; he drops the lowest quiz grade anyway.”), but rather treat it as a safety net (“I'm lucky I was there for all the quizzes, so I don’t have to worry about the rotten score I got on the second one.”).
